Things you Need to Know about Addiction Treatment

Drug abuse affects millions of people from all walks of life. The excessive and repeated use of any chemical or mind-altering substance can have devastating effects on both the person taking the substance and those around the individual. Even legal, over-the-counter drugs can be extremely habit forming if not taken correctly, and prescription drugs and alcohol account for a large percentage of the substances abused every day. If you’ve identified addiction in someone close to you or even yourself and wish to get treatment, there are a few things you need to know before proceeding.

Unfortunately, beating a drug habit or alcoholism isn’t as simple as deciding to quit. Even with the proper care and rehabilitation, the addicted individual will always be susceptible to relapse. In fact, relapses occur at a frequent pace. This is often due to a lack of adequate aftercare or a patient’s unwillingness to let any respective program work for them.

Through years of studies, scientists have identified that addiction is a legitimate mental disorder and not simply the physical effects of abusing a harmful substance. An addict’s brain is hardwired to take drugs. They’re dependent on the substance. This is a vicious cycle that’s incredibly hard to break without the grit and determination and effort put forth by not only the patient, but those surrounding the person. An addict’s entire life must change, and contrary to widespread belief, there is no such thing as post-recovery for an addict. Drug treatment is a lifelong process.

Psychiatrists have been delving into the field of sociopathic behavior for years, only to find out that sociopaths in treatment simply learn to hone their craft. They learn to mimic empathy and learn conversational skills that help them adapt to society. In short, treatment helps their disease grow. While drug addicts and sociopaths don’t share much in common in terms of disorder classification, they have both learned to hone their craft. An addict, if wanting a drug, will stop at nothing to get it. Treatments and heartfelt apologies could be nothing more than a means to an end for the addict. This is always a danger with substance abuse; the treatment’s effectiveness rests solely in the hands of the addict.

Drug addicts have convinced themselves that they don’t need help. This is why it’s imperative that, when they are in treatment, certain behavioral aspects need to be explored. It’s not enough to remove the substance from an addict, the person’s entire life will have to change in order to prevent relapse.

There are certain medications given to some drug abusers during and after treatment to help thwart any cravings, but these are not to be used as a crutch. Even harmless medications can become dangerous in the hands of an addict. If the alternative to drugs is no longer available, the ready access to drugs almost ensures relapse.

With constant monitoring, behavioral changes, moral support and, most of all, a willingness to quit, an addict can successfully break from the vicious cycle of substance abuse. It’s never going to be an easy job, but treatment can work for an addict if they allow it.
